South Philadelphia’s Bryant Baptist Church is working to make disciples out of people, with a strategy of realness — teaching fundamental, straightforward life lessons and focusing discerningly on real work versus feel-good work.
Senior Pastor the Rev. D. Omar Epps believes that “There’s a difference between church work and kingdom work,” that the “church” does not exist for the sole purpose of making the “church” feel good, but for actual work — building a kingdom, to be sure.
“We have a desire to make disciples of men within the church of God, [to] put them in a position where they will be comfortable with spreading the Gospel, the good news of Jesus on the outside,” said Epps. “Most churches are confined within the four walls — what they are doing inside for each other, but we’ve flipped it. We do community first and then we do ourselves after that.”
